EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region Meeting

On the 28-29th of November, 2012 in Riga there will be a 5th Steering Group Meeting of Priority Area 3: “To reduce the use and impact of hazardous substances” of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR).

One of cooperative actions of EUSBSR priority area 3 is to “Assess the need to clean up contaminated wrecks and chemical weapons”, where it is required to protect sensitive marine ecosystems, taking into account earlier work carried out by HELCOM. CHEMSEA is a co-project under this flagship. 


The status and progress of the CHEMSEA project will be presented during this meeting by the member of the Steering Group and the partner of the CHEMSEA project Galina Garnaga (Lithuanian Environmental Protection Agency).


Who are we?

CHEMSEA (Chemical Munitions, Search and Assessment) is a flagship project of the Baltic Sea Region Strategy, financed by the EU Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013. The project was initiated in autumn 2011 and will last through early 2014. It has a budget of 4.5M, which is part-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund. The project is under the leadership of the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IOPAN).
